The leak could get worse resulting in no water to your property or it could lead to damage to your own or neighbouring properties. The water company may opt to undertake an enforced repair. This is where they or their contractor can access your property and make a repair. You would then receive an invoice to cover the work and possibly an administration fee. It would probably be cheaper to appoint your own contractor. They may have the option to issue a fine and if the leak is so bad that it comprimises other supplies in the area or poses a health & safety hazard (i.e. freezing water) they may be able to cut the supply off. Obviously if you are a metered customer it’s in your own interest to get a timely repair made to prevent revenue losses. Also, if a water supplier were to consider a leakage allowance against your metered consumption, they are more inclined to look at your claim favourably if you make efforts to get a prompt repair carried out.
